Ian Buchanan

Barclays
Group CIO

Ian is the Group Chief Information Officer for Barclays and responsible for leading Technology across PCB, Barclaycard, Investment Bank, Africa and Group Functions, as well as infrastructure services.

Prior to this, Ian was Barclaycard’s Chief Operating Officer where he was responsible for leading the customer servicing, operations and technology teams that support Barclaycard’s 30 million customers and clients across 9 markets around the world. Barclaycard is a global player in consumer payments and the number one credit card issuer in the UK and Europe, continuing to innovate as well as deliver strong growth and returns for Barclays.  


Ian joined Barclays in 2011 from Societe Generale where he was the Global CIO for the Corporate and Investment Bank. Based in Paris, Ian led the transformation of the investment banks technology strategy, capability and culture following a major trader fraud in 2008. He subsequently enabled the expansion of the business outside of Paris, focusing on the US, Asian and London markets.
 
Between 2005 and 2008, Ian was on the executive committee and group board of Alliance & Leicester Plc, a UK retail and commercial bank which was subsequently acquired by Santander in 2008. During his time at Alliance & Leicester, Ian was Group CIO and subsequently Group COO, responsible for transforming the bank’s operating model and IT platforms as well as the creation of an integrated customer operations and technology division which he led.
 
Prior to Alliance & Leicester, Ian spent 11 years with Nomura, initially leading a major IT transformation programme, and subsequently as CIO, and then as a member of the executive committee, where he was head of a combined Operations and Technology division for the investment bank. Ian joined Nomura from Credit Suisse where he held a number of IT leadership roles.
 
Ian’s earlier career was spent with BP and Diageo in analysis, consulting and project management roles.
 
Ian holds a degree in Physics from Durham University and lives in Cambridge with his family.
